HeartSmart, Inc., was founded in 1989 by Richard Perse, II to provide CPR/First Aid training to schools, childcare centers, businesses, and individuals using "specialized programs" he developed. Mr. Perse was a fire/paramedic with West Metro Fire Department in Lakewood, CO prior to forming the company.

 

Since 1980, he has been a Red Cross CPR/First Aid instructor and a former American Heart Association instructor/trainer. He graduated as a scuba instructor from a specialized professional sport diver college in San Diego and taught for San Diego Divers Supply. He completed a Red Cross water safety instructor (WSI) during this time. Rich is a pioneer in public access defibrillator (PAD) and has helped various agencies such as the University of Colorado, Invesco Corporation, Oppenheimer Funds and Windsor High School (the first Colorado school) to implement AED programs.

Heart Smart Inc. is approved by the Colorado Department of Health- EMS Divsion as a state approved AED training program and are training specialists for the Philips HeartStart AEDs. Recently, we became a proud sponsor for the "Kick Start My Heart" Foundation which raises funds for AEDs in schools and with athletic teams statewide. He has been certified by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross as an AED trainer. He graduated as the top student from St. Anthony Hospital's Paramedic Program (Cycle 33) under the direction of Dr Gerald Gordon.
HeartSmart, Inc. specializes in emergency response training using educational, practical, and "user friendly" courses taught by EMS professionals. By using these professionals and our programs, we have the flexibility to customize your training for your specific work site. This way the class will address situations that are unique to your facility.  Nancy Near-Perse, R.N. M.S.N. acts as a technical consultant for program development. Boulder Community Hospital does medical direction for our AED programs. Dr. Ray Jaris with MD Solutions in Seattle does medical direction nationally and internationally for our AED rental program (www.aedworldwide.com).

The emergency programs available include CPR, First Aid, AED, Sport Medic, Medications Administration, Universal Precautions, Disaster Preparedness and Communicable Diseases. HeartSmart has developed "Kid's Aid" to teach preschool children through 8th graders, basic CPR, First Aid, and general emergency procedures.
